Qualifications

Dr Kiely studied medicine at Sydney University, and graduated in 2008.  Subsequently he undertook specialist training in gastroenterology at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, gaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2014.  During this time he developed a special interest in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).  This was further refined over two years, while working at Canberra Hospital and in the United Kingdom, where he was the senior clinical fellow in IBD at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.  He completed a PhD focused on IBD through the Australian National University in 2021, and has multiple peer-review publications in this area.

Professional memberships include Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a member of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia and ANZGITA (Australia and New Zealand Gastrointestinal Training Association).  He is a clinical tutor in the Medical Doctor programme at Sydney University.

Dr Kiely is accredited to perform adult gastroscopy and colonoscopy by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.  He was re-certified in 2019.

For two years (2016 until 2018) Dr Kiely was based in Dili, Timor-Leste.  While there he re-established Timor-Leste’s only endoscopy unit.  This is located in the National Hospital, HNGV.  He is now the country program director for ANZGITA in Timor-Leste, and will provide ongoing support to the HNGV Endoscopy Unit.

With Dr Kiely and ANZGITA’s support, Timor-Leste now has:

  • a fully functional diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy unit
  • Timorese doctors and nurses trained in endoscopy
  • an after-hours emergency endoscopy service for gastrointestinal bleeding
  • standards and protocols in place for safe and effective endoscopy treatment
  • a clinic for antiviral treatment for patients with hepatitis B

Research

Dr Kiely is an active researcher in the field of gastroenterology.  He has presented at national and international medical conferences.  He gained his PhD from Australian National University in 2021.  Dr Kiely has published multiple articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed medical journals on subjects such as:

  • the microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease
  • pregnancy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • novel treatments for autoimmune hepatitis
  • hepatitis B virus treatment
  • acetarsol for the treatment of refractory proctitis
  • the safety of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tubes (PEG tubes)
  • bowel cancer diagnosis
  • Clostridium difficile infection
  • immunotherapy-related colitis
